Maternity pay calculator

How much money do you get during maternity leave (Mutterschutz), and who pays it? Tell us how you are insured and what you earn net.

Step 1 of 2

How are you health insured?

This decides who pays: your health insurer or the Federal Office for Social Security, plus your employer.

Who gets maternity pay?

Women in employment, including a minijob, and women with statutory health insurance who are entitled to sick pay (Krankengeld). It covers the protection periods 6 weeks before and 8 weeks after the birth, 12 weeks after a premature or multiple birth.

How much?

Statutory insurance in your own right: your health insurer pays up to €13 a day, and your employer pays the rest up to your net pay of the last three months on your payslips as a top-up (Zuschuss). Private or family insurance: the Federal Office for Social Security pays up to €210 once, plus the employer top-up.

How to apply

With statutory insurance you apply for maternity pay with your health insurer; with private or family insurance, with the Federal Office for Social Security (Bundesamt für Soziale Sicherung). You need the certificate of the expected date of delivery from your doctor or midwife. Your employer pays the top-up through your payroll.

Maternity pay and Elterngeld

Maternity pay from your health insurer and the top-up for the time after the birth are deducted in full from Elterngeld, and these months of life count as the mother’s Basic months. The €210 from the federal office are not deducted.
