The main rules

Together there are 12 monthly amounts of Basic Elterngeld, 14 with the partner months. A Plus month counts as half. Basic runs up to month of life 14, Plus up to 32. Each parent takes at least 2 months. Both taking Basic at the same time works in only one of the first 12 months of life.

Examples are starting points

The examples show what other couples often do. They are not advice. Which split suits you depends on jobs, childcare and money.

Common questions

How many months of Elterngeld do we get as a couple?

Up to 14 monthly amounts of Basic Elterngeld if both of you take Elterngeld and one of you earns less. With Plus that becomes up to 28 months, plus up to 4 bonus months each.

Can we take Elterngeld at the same time?

Plus and bonus, yes, as much as you like. Basic at the same time only in one month of life, and only within the first 12.

What are months of life?

Elterngeld runs from the birthday: if your baby is born on 15 March, the first month of life ends on 14 April.

Can I share the plan?
