Elterngeld for civil servants

Civil servants (Beamte) get Elterngeld just like employees. Because no social contributions are deducted from their pay, their Elterngeld net income is usually higher at the same gross pay. Calculate with your pay here.

Step 1 of 6

If your baby is already here, use the date of birth.

What is deducted

From the gross pay the Elterngeldstelle deducts wage tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax if it applies, but no flat rates for social contributions: civil servants pay no contributions to pension, unemployment and statutory health insurance. That is why their Elterngeld net income is higher than an employee’s with the same gross pay.

Maternity leave for civil servants

Female civil servants keep receiving their pay during maternity leave, under their employer’s rules. The pay after the birth counts against Elterngeld, and these months of life count as the mother’s Basic months.

Parental leave for civil servants

Parental leave for civil servants is governed not by the BEEG but by federal or state civil service law. You still apply for Elterngeld at the Elterngeldstelle. The income limit also applies to civil servants.
