What do you know already?
How it is calculated
The due date is 280 days (40 weeks) after the first day of your last period. This is Naegele’s rule, counted in days. If your cycle is longer than 28 days, the due date is correspondingly later; if it is shorter, earlier. From conception it is 266 days.
Reading the pregnancy week
In Germany the week of pregnancy (Schwangerschaftswoche, SSW) is counted from the first day of the last period. “SSW 14+3” means 14 full weeks and 3 days, so you are in week 15. The first two weeks already count, although conception only happens at the end of the second week, around 2+0.
Due date from the ultrasound
At the first ultrasound your doctor measures the baby and corrects the due date if needed. From then on the due date in your Mutterpass applies. For maternity leave, the due date in the certificate from your doctor or midwife counts.
Maternity leave and parental leave
Maternity leave starts 6 weeks before the due date; the whole period is shown by the maternity leave calculator. Whoever takes parental leave from the birth notifies it 7 weeks before the due date. The mother usually starts parental leave only after maternity leave and then notifies it about one week after the birth. All dates are in the deadline calculator.
And Elterngeld?
How much Elterngeld you get is worked out by the Elterngeld calculator, step by step with the legal section.
Common questions
How do I work out my week of pregnancy?
Count the days since the first day of your last period and divide by 7. The result is the full weeks, the remainder the days: 101 days is SSW 14+3, so week 15. If your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, the calculator shifts this by the difference.
How do I calculate my due date?
First day of your last period plus 280 days. If your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, add or subtract the difference.
What does SSW 12+0 mean?
Exactly 12 full weeks since the first day of your last period. You are on the first day of week 13.
How accurate is the due date?
It is an estimate; very few babies arrive on exactly that day. Your doctor sets the due date after the first ultrasound.
When does maternity leave start in Germany?
The protection period before the birth starts 6 weeks before the due date in the certificate from your doctor or midwife. During this time you do not have to work.
