Elterngeld in Lower Saxony
Elterngeld is the same amount everywhere in Germany. In Lower Saxony you apply at the Elterngeld office of your district, the Hanover region or your city. How that works is summed up above, and below you work out how much you get.

How much Elterngeld in Lower Saxony?
Exactly as much as everywhere else: 65 to 100% of the Elterngeld net income before the birth, at least €300 and at most €1,800 Basic Elterngeld a month, plus any sibling bonus or multiple-birth supplement. This is set by the federal Elterngeld act, not by the state. How much you get is worked out by the calculator above; the Elterngeld table gives an overview.
Where to apply?
In Lower Saxony the districts, the Hanover region and the cities process the application, in part also larger towns within districts. The office where you live is responsible; the search on the federal Familienportal shows it.
Applying online
Since August 2026 the online application in Lower Saxony runs via mein-elterngeldantrag.de, the successor of ElterngeldDigital; you log in with your BundID. At the end you print it, both parents sign (single parents alone), and you send it by post to the Elterngeld office.
Multiple births
With triplets or more, the state gives €250 per child at birth, regardless of income; you apply within 12 months at the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Family. The guideline runs until the end of 2027; the further €250 at school entry only applies to children born today if it is extended.
Deadline and documents
